Since we moved here, I have always noticed the notice in the local papers for yoga on the beach, and while it has always sounded fun, I had not tried it until recently. Having never taken yoga classes consistently, I did not feel confident enough to practice yoga poses where nearly anyone could walk by and see me. However, I was in need of something new in my workout routine and thought what better way to start my weekend than enjoying the fresh beach air while completing my exercise for the day? So, I participated a few weeks ago and since then I have been back every week that I am able to go!
The yoga class is located on the beach at the west end of Pine Street (Gulf of Mexico side) in Anna Maria, starts at 8:30 each Saturday morning, and runs for about an hour (sometimes more). Since I have been going, the size of the class fluctuates from about 8-15 participants and the instructors rotate each week. Some people are from the area and come each week, while others are here on vacation and only participate once or twice.
The instructors do a great job of making the classes challenging but fun for all levels. They will start out with beginner moves and move to more advanced moves, with different options for everyone. Each instructor has a slightly different style which adds a nice variety to the class. The location is perfect because we are surrounded on all sides by seagrass and I never feel like I am on display for others to watch.
There are a few people who walk past on their way to the beach, but because it is earlier in the day, it is normally quiet with very few distractions. Additionally, nearby trees provide shade for almost the entire hour keeping the temperature pleasant. The hour passes by quickly and I enjoy every minute of it! Being outside on the sand in the fresh air is an amazing way to take yoga and my favorite way to start the weekend!

It is a very relaxed atmosphere and you are sure to enjoy your time doing yoga on the beach. I have seen men and women of all ages attend, so bring the family! Afterwards, head into town for some coffee and breakfast, or walk the beach for a few minutes to cool down; wading in the water feels great!
At this time, the class meets each Saturday and Sunday morning at 8:30 am, weather permitting. Payment is donation only. Bring a blanket or a beach towel and a bottle of water.
