Whether you are here for a week or for a longer period, you might find a good reason to visit one (or both) of the 2 libraries on the island during your stay. It is a great way to take a quick break from the sun or spend a few hours during a rainy afternoon. Young, old, and everyone in between will find something of interest at the library as there is a wide variety of programs and events… along with of course many books and movies.
Manatee County Library – Island Branch
As a mother of 2 young children, I am a frequent guest at our local library, located at 5701 Marina Dr, a little south of the fire department and city hall in Holmes Beach. There is a special kid’s room with puzzles, coloring activities and big stuffed animals to read to that is always available during library hours and is a great FREE way to spend a couple of hours in the morning. We enjoy attending the weekly story time on Tuesdays at 10 am and the other various kids’ activities available.
While I am most familiar with the children’s programs, I have also noticed that there are many events and groups for adults as well. Whether you are interested in learning more about e-readers, essential oils, various nature on the island, knitting, or meeting authors, there is probably something for you!
Look for the calendar of events at the Island Branch, unless you don’t mind driving to another location in Manatee County. Additionally, as you drive by the library take a look at their sign as it highlights the main events – you might see something that is worth the trip! Most of the events are free at the library – but if you are unsure you can always call ahead of time.
For those who would like to check out books or movies during your visit to the island, the Library currently can sign you up for a library card for $20 (non-resident fee).
Island Branch Library hours are from 9-5 on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and 12 to 8 on Wednesday. They are closed Monday and Sunday.
Tingley Memorial Library
Tingley Memorial Library is also available for Island visitors. It is located at 111 2nd St North in Bradenton Beach (close to the Cortez Bridge). It is a privately funded library and along with a good selection of books, it continually has a book sale going. You can visit 10am-3pm Tuesdays through Saturdays and open up an account for a small fee. I have not spent much time here, but more information is available by visiting the Bradenton beach website (http://www.cityofbradentonbeach.com/) or calling 941-779-1208.
